Background of the Study:
The integration of technology into education has revolutionized teaching and learning practices worldwide. In secondary schools in Takai LGA, Kano State, technology is increasingly used to create interactive and engaging learning environments. Digital tools such as computers, interactive whiteboards, and educational software are being incorporated to supplement traditional teaching methods (Adamu, 2023). These innovations are intended to foster personalized learning, improve student engagement, and develop critical digital literacy skills. However, the effectiveness of technology in enhancing academic performance is influenced by several factors, including teacher training, infrastructural support, and curriculum integration (Sule, 2024).

Schools in Takai LGA have embarked on various initiatives to integrate technology into classrooms, ranging from the establishment of computer labs to the incorporation of e-learning platforms. Research suggests that when technology is effectively integrated, it can lead to significant improvements in student performance and foster critical thinking skills (Femi, 2025). Despite these potential benefits, challenges persist. Inadequate technical support, intermittent electricity supply, and the high costs associated with acquiring modern equipment have impeded the full realization of technology’s benefits in some schools. Additionally, discrepancies in digital literacy among teachers have resulted in uneven application of technology in instruction. This study seeks to assess the current use of technology in teaching and learning in secondary schools in Takai LGA, evaluating both its benefits and the challenges that limit its effectiveness (Adamu, 2023).

Statement of the Problem:
Despite the recognized potential of technology to enhance educational outcomes, secondary schools in Takai LGA face considerable challenges in effectively integrating digital tools into teaching and learning. Infrastructural deficiencies such as unreliable power supply and outdated equipment undermine the effectiveness of technological interventions (Sule, 2024). Furthermore, the lack of comprehensive teacher training in digital literacy results in inconsistent application of technology in classroom settings. These issues, compounded by the high costs of maintenance and equipment upgrades, hinder the optimal use of technology as an educational tool (Femi, 2025). The absence of standardized guidelines for technology integration further contributes to disparities across schools. Consequently, while technology holds promise for enhancing academic performance, its full potential remains unrealized in many secondary schools. This study aims to identify and analyze the barriers to effective technology integration and to propose strategies for overcoming these challenges.

Objectives of the Study:

  1. To assess the extent and effectiveness of technology integration in secondary schools in Takai LGA.
  2. To identify the challenges hindering the effective use of technology in teaching and learning.
  3. To recommend strategies for improving the integration of technology in secondary education.

Research Questions:

  1. How is technology currently used in teaching and learning in secondary schools in Takai LGA?
  2. What challenges do schools face in effectively integrating technology into the curriculum?
  3. What strategies can enhance the integration of technology in educational practices?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. H1: Effective technology integration significantly enhances student academic performance.
  2. H2: Infrastructural deficiencies negatively impact the use of technology in education.
  3. H3: Teacher digital literacy is a key determinant of successful technology integration.

Significance of the Study:
This study is significant as it evaluates the role of technology in transforming teaching and learning practices in secondary schools in Takai LGA. The findings will provide insights for educators and policymakers to address challenges, optimize digital integration, and enhance overall academic outcomes.

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is limited to the assessment of technology integration in teaching and learning in secondary schools within Takai LGA, Kano State. It focuses exclusively on technology-related factors.

Definitions of Terms:

  1. Technology Integration: The incorporation of digital tools into teaching and learning processes.
  2. Digital Literacy: The ability to effectively use digital tools for educational purposes.
  3. Secondary Schools: Educational institutions providing education to adolescents, typically aged 12 to 18 years.
